How did the shooting happen?
It's important to look at how the bullet holes occurred. Someone could have shot at your car, or you could have been parked in the wrong place at the wrong time.
When you file an insurance claim, you need to identify what happened. An investigation is likely to be opened to ensure that everything happened as you say it did. If you have a police report to share as well, this will be extremely important.
Some areas of the United States have higher crime rates than in other areas. Bullet holes occur in areas where there are high crime rates and a large number of gangs.
When you get insurance, you have to provide your zip code so that insurance companies can look at the crime rate for your area. High crime rate areas typically involve higher insurance premiums.
If you came out of your home, a store, or anywhere else and found bullet holes in your car, this is something that needs to be reported.
Now, if you were involved in the shooting, there might be an exclusion in your policy.
Exclusions are standard in all insurance policies. They dictate scenarios where insurance won't cover the damage.
If you were involved in a gun shootout and your car got damaged as a result of it, you might not have the coverage that you think you do. The expenses for the repairs would be yours to deal with.

What's the total cost of damage?
It's important to file the claim and schedule the repairs to be done as quickly as possible. If you wait too long on the repairs, there could end up being even more damage. Insurance will only pay for the initial damage if they pay at all.
Some of the damage you could experience with bullet holes include:
- Damage to the body of the car
- Broken windows, etc.
When you work with the adjuster from the insurance company, they will have you go to a collision center or mechanic. From there, a mechanic will identify the full level of damage from the bullet holes. A cost will be associated with the repairs.
Once there is a total repair cost, you can decide if you want to continue with insurance paying for everything.
You will be responsible for paying the deductible that's on your policy, and insurance will then pay the rest.
If the repairs are lower than the cost of your deductible, you should plan on handling the repairs on your own since it's a more affordable option. Plus, when you end up not having insurance pay for the repairs, it can end up preventing your policy from going up after filing a claim.
What does your policy include?
You have different levels of coverage on your policy. Car insurance companies will often pay for bullet hole damage. Bullet holes are not caused by your average car accident, though.
The coverage you have that the state requires is for liability to be used if you're in an accident involving another vehicle.
With bullet holes, you need comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive coverage is for "non-collision" related incidents, which certainly includes bullet holes.
Some lien holders might require you to have comprehensive coverage as a way of protecting their financial investment. Even if you own your car outright, adding additional coverage provides you with protection. You won't have to pay for all of the repairs on your own.
If you have comprehensive coverage, insurance is more likely to cover damage from bullet holes. You have to look at how the damage and what your involvement was.
It's best to file the claim as soon as possible. You can then pay the deductible, and let insurance cover the cost of repairs.
